I sat at my computer tonight to work on some writing. As I stared into my screen, drawing a blank. My eye’s began to wander the smooth contour’s of the silver…plastic?…Metal? I reached out with a finger nail to give it the tell all, dissective tap…Hmpf?? Spaceship, my computer is made of spaceship.
Then I began to trace back down the twisted path to the origins of this alluring device. Back through the sales shop with the smiling staff greeting us at the door. Out the back door and into the cargo truck, motor back to the airport, blast off thousands of feet into the atmosphere aaaaaaand come down again in some humid, foreign tongued land on the other side of the Earth. Back in to the truck, to the factory where busy people pick and pry it apart, back to the smelting plant, reverse through the process and out the other end to the back of the mining truck then waaaaay on down to the bottom of the pit and the materials original point of origin…the spaceship mine.
Dozers and diggers…assemblers, presses, planes, trucks, engineers, programmers…designers!..Salespersons…I think I’ve included everyone? Oh, and us, finally, the consumer.
Out of the Earth, pass through all the plants and people and finally! Now! Here! Right in front of me sits this magnificent silver do-dad with buttons and lights…oh? Wait. No lights, not yet. I’m thinking now, for this whole miracle to be complete. We need the energy. More energy!!
Back into the mines and the shovels and conveyors, reactors and turbines, oh my! A whole other industry, required to transform my dreams to reality.
Many years ago, we would spend our energy in the gardens and the fields, helping our neighbours shingle their roofs or erect their fences. All the time watchful eye’s of our children take in every detail. Learning, growing.
Now we have no time. Mother and father both have to work, in our modern society where our only interest seems to lie, mostly in paying interest. Friends, family, no time. But have no fear, with all the millions of tones of earth moved, mined, burned and people hours applied, we now have these handy hand held devices.

“Is life to overbearing for you? Kids, spouses out of control? Are you being distracted from your 12hr workday? Well worry no more! The solution has arrived! It’s a phone! It’s a tablet! Or perhaps even a phablet!?”
“Not enough? Your child has a dose of ADHD and needs extra special attention!? Well worry not! We have a special App for those special loved ones!”
“Have a child approaching upon the challenging time of puberty, Angry Birds no longer attractive any more? Not a problem. 90% of our online content is highly educational pornography!”
“Yes, simply sit them down in a place of comfort, turn on their new device, supply a bag of chips and let technology melt the need for you from their memory. In fact we have a 100% guaranteed, guarantee that after 1 hour with our product they will actually prefer it’s inanimate company over yours! Because honestly, your living to work lifestyle has made you boring as sh**!

Flashing buttons…illuminated screens, bings, buzzers and vibrations. Apparently the only sound more appealing to the human psyche, beyond the sounds emitted by our electronics, is that of an infant laughing. But have faith that somewhere in the world, genius minds behind the great machine are working on a way to eliminate that nuisance as well.
So I personally have been bamboozled. These glowing, beeping gadgets aren’t giving energy back to us…well, I suppose a tumor could be considered energy. We spend our precious time and resources to create these wonders and then they attract yet more of our attention/energy like a nighttime bug to a zapper.
But why? What is the purpose?
That’s enough for today, I’m going to think on this a little. Feel free to send any comments here, to my email, on Facebook, where ever.
I’m going to shut down my zapper and go dedicate some time and energy to my boys, In form of a wedgy.
